Local Volunteering

Build, Mend & Transform Your Community!

The folks of Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, and Perry Counties in East Kentucky love the hills and hollows of home. We know, too, that they also care deeply about their friends and neighbors. That’s why we invite our local people to serve others with us during our annual events!

If you have a desire to help others, serve your community, or give back in a meaningful, impactful way, come join us for any of our special volunteer events! These events, which we’ll publicize as we need volunteers for them, give you an opportunity to help folks in our community get the home repairs they need but can’t afford. In our Community House Raising, you’ll see a local low-income family become the owners of a home you helped build. Whether it’s for a single day or for several days, we’d love to have you roll up your sleeves and help your neighbors in need!

We welcome individuals and groups to serve with us. Keep in mind that you do not need to have any construction experience to volunteer with HDA! Our on-staff carpenters will be onsite to guide and help you.

Are you a member of a local church who’d like to bring a group to serve the community with us? Do you lead a school group – like JROTC, 4-H, a Drama Club, or sports team – that would like to help out and do some community service? Or maybe you’re part of a local business or civic group that’s looking for opportunities to serve? Contact us to learn more about our program and join us in helping folks in need of new and better housing they can afford!

What Do Local Volunteers Do?

Our crews work in all weathers, in many different locations throughout the counties we serve, and on projects of varying scales. For our Repair-A-Thon and Community House Raising, we try to keep our projects as close as possible to Hazard, Hindman, Hyden, or Jackson. You will need to provide your own transportation (cars, trucks, or vans are recommended) and snacks. We generally provide water to all of our worksites. When possible, a meal could be provided (for example, a breakfast or lunch during the event). If you have special needs or requests, please let our Volunteer & Community Coordinator know!

After signing up to serve, local volunteers should let us know the date (or dates) and times that work best for them. Keep in mind that dates are claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. Our Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with you to determine the best time for you to serve that meets your goals, our needs, and the needs of our clients. You will also need to abide by our requests for group sizes and any other requirements made by our staff. We will do everything we can to accommodate you and facilitate a rewarding experience for your group!

You’ve probably heard people say that the best gift you can give is your time, and we believe that’s true. If you have a willing heart and can give a few hours, a day, or longer to build a local family an affordable home or make home repairs that help make someone’s home a better place to live, that’s time well-spent.
