Donor FAQs

The Housing Development Alliance, Inc. (HDA) is a 501 (c) (3) organization. As a nonprofit operating in Appalachian Kentucky – one of the poorest regions in the country, we rely on our funders, grants. and gifts from our donors to help us reach our annual goals and help us serve as many low-income East Kentucky families in need of affordable housing as possible.

HDA accepts gifts in accordance with state and federal laws. Unrestricted gifts are encouraged; gifts with the fewest possible restrictions allow us to address our most pressing needs. Gifts are accepted only for purposes consistent with our mission and planning.

You can learn more about the tax benefits you may be eligible for when you make a donation to the Housing Development Alliance by reading our answers to the questions below.

If you have a question about a specific donation you’ve made, please contact HDA’s Director of Development & Communications via email or by calling 606-436-0497, ext. 2028.

The Housing Development Alliance is a nonprofit affordable housing developer dedicated to serving low-income families in Appalachian Kentucky. The counties we serve are some of the poorest in the entire nation. We believe that every East Kentucky family deserves a home they can afford, and our mission is to use the power of housing to transform lives and build a brighter future for our communities.

Your donation helps give low-income and middle-income families – the workforce of eastern Kentucky – a chance to become homeowners and a chance to greatly improve the homes they have. Currently, in our region, over 40% of low-income families remain inadequately housed. That means the families we serve are living in homes that are not suitable for them, are in need of significant repairs that they can’t afford, are overcrowded (sometimes two and three generations live in one home), and in many cases, families cannot afford their rent or house payment and are in danger of losing their homes.

Your gift helps us build new homes for these families that they can afford. These are homes that are built to last and are homes that the families should remain in for a lifetime. By giving to HDA, you are helping us lay a new foundation for the future of Appalachia. Affordable housing changes lives, empowers families, and makes our mountain communities stronger, more adaptable, and poised to flourish in a new economy.

As a result of our lean operations and program-focused spending, the Housing Development Alliance has grown to become one of the largest nonprofit affordable housing developers in the state of Kentucky.

HDA works hard to make sure your gift goes directly to efforts to help the families of East Kentucky in need of affordable housing. You may like to know that 92% of our annual budget goes directly toward providing affordable housing programs and services to low-income Appalachian families. Less than 6% is used for administration costs, and only around 2% is used for fundraising purposes.

Our financials are available for your review here on our website, on our GuideStar (Platinum Transparency) and Charity Navigator profiles (HDA has a 4-star rating) and in our Annual Report. If you’d like a print copy of our Annual Report to be mailed to you, you can request that here.
